The game is “goal-to-go” with a network, said Crowley Sullivan, general manager of CampusInsiders.com. ESPN would be an unlikely partner, as it’s showing all three of the day’s other games — the Armed Forces Bowl, Russell Athletic Bowl and Texas bowl — throughout the day. The Arizona Bowl has partnered with CampusInsiders.com for what it says is the first digitally focused postseason game in history. The streaming website will preview and cover the game extensively; a television partner will be announced shortly. For one, the Arizona Bowl will be held at the newly renovated Arizona Stadium.

On April 18, 2017, it was announced that CBS Sports Network had acquired rights to the Arizona Bowl under a "multi-year" deal; Campus Insiders is no longer involved in the broadcast. The 2021 game was canceled after the Boise State Broncos withdrew due to COVID-19 issues within the program. Their scheduled opponent, the Central Michigan Chippewas, were named as a replacement team for the Sun Bowl.

The odd matchup is strangely fitting for Tucson’s bowl game, which will be run — and broadcast — differently than most games. Bowl officials talked to the Pac-12 about taking the Arizona Wildcats, but were rebuffed. The Red Wolves compiled an 8–4 record during the regular season, and were co-champion of the Sun Belt West Division along with the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, both of whom had 5–3 conference records. The Aztecs are hoping to play themselves into a spot in the Las Vegas Bowl, which has a $1.35 million payout, approximately three times the expected payout for the Arizona Bowl. The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl could also be a spot for the Aztecs, although the bowl prefers not to have the same team two years in a row (SDSU lost to Navy in last year’s game).
The Arizona Bowl was officially announced on October 1, 2015 as the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl. It was also announced that the Sun Belt Conference would provide a secondary tie-in in case either conference did not have a bowl-eligible team to play the Arizona Bowl. Since the fall semester ended on December 12, it cost NMSU $44,451 for student athlete per diem and housing between the end of the semester and the bowl game, as well as another $28,732 for one meal per day for the football team. Georgia State also entered the game with a 7–5 record (4–4 in conference), also having lost three of four games to end their regular season. The Panthers also lost to the only ranked FBS team they faced, Appalachian State. Wyoming entered the game with a 7–5 record (4–4 in conference), having lost three of four games to end their regular season.
